Residence permits for parents and children who applied for international protection in Iceland before 1 August 2021

Requirements

To be issued a residence permit for parents, who have been in Iceland since before 1 August 2021 for their and their children's applications for international protection, applicants must:

  • have applied for international protection in Iceland with their children, under the age of 18, before 1 August 2021, or

  • have applied for international protection in Iceland before 1 August 2021 and had a baby in Iceland while their application was being processed.

Applicants must also meet the following requirements:

  • still be in Iceland,

  • not be subject to a re-entry ban,

  • submit an application for a residence permit before 5 July 2023,

  • submit an insurance certificate, confirming that they have purchased a health insurance for themselves and their children

    • valid for six months from the date of the applicant's registration in Iceland

    • with a coverage of at least ISK 2000,000

    • from an insurance company authorized to operate in Iceland 

  • not have an unresolved case in the criminal justice system where they are suspected or accused of criminal conduct, and

  • not serve or wait for a prison term.

The Directorate of Immigration gathers information from the prosecution authority and police in Iceland to confirm that the last two conditions are met.
