Residence permits for parents and children who applied for international protection in Iceland before 1 August 2021

The deadline to apply for this permit has passed.

Parents and their children, who applied for international protection in Iceland before 1 August 2021 and are still here, are entitled to a residence permit under a temporary provision of the Foreign Nationals Act.

The right applies to legal guardians and their children, under the age of 18, who

  • applied for international protection in Iceland before 1 August 2021 and are still here, or

  • were born in Iceland while an application for international protection from their legal guardians, received before 1 August 2021, was being processed.

Application

An application must be submitted to the Directorate of Immigration by 5 July 2023.

Please note that you only need to fill out one application per family.

Applications can only be submitted in paper form. They can either be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s reception. Applications can also be handed in at the Directorate’s reception or at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.

An application must be in its original form, duly completed and signed by the applicant.

Processing fee

An application for a first residence permit for parents and children applying for international protection before 1 August 2021 is free of charge. A renewal application must be paid for.

Law

The residence permit is granted on the basis of Article 22 of the law amending the Foreign Nationals Act.
