The National Electoral Commission has publicised that a referendum will take place on 29 August 2026.

The National Electoral Commission has publicised in Stjórnartíðindi that a referendum will be held on 29 August 2026 on whether Iceland should resume accession negotiations with the European Union.
The referendum is being held pursuant to Article 2(2) of the Elections Act No. 112/2021. The result of the referendum is advisory, in accordance with Article 123(3) of the same Act. Those eligible to vote in the referendum are voters who are entitled to vote in parliamentary elections and presidential elections under Article 3 of the Elections Act No. 112/2021.

Advance voting begins today, 27 July 2026. Information on where early voting is available within Iceland can be found on the District Commissioners’ website. Abroad, early voting may be carried out at Icelandic embassies and with honorary consuls.
