Strategy for the marine and coastal areas
The national planning policy provides for a coordinated national planning policy for the whole country and for the coastal and maritime areas.
was approved by the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, in the spring of 2024.
The National Planning Policy 2024-2038 contains the nine key objectives of marine and coastal planning. The objectives are three, the protection of the environment and nature, the well-being of the community and a competitive economy. Under each objective, the objectives are presented along with recommendations for their implementation for marine and coastal planning in the countryside, as well as in central highlands, in rural areas and urban areas. The recommendations of the policy that apply to marine and coastal planning are marked (H) in. The National Planning Policy is being prepared, where the objectives and recommendations for their implementation are divided into chapters, depending on the regions they apply to. The publication will therefore be able to access all the implementing provisions that apply to marine and coastal planning in one place.
The action plan that follows the policy also includes specific projects to implement its objectives, some of which are direct or indirectly related to the marine and coastal planning.
