The use categories include emphasis on utilisation in a specific area, as well as describing what other utilisation is possible in the area concerned. The use categories to be used, where appropriate, are as follows:

a. Local exploitation

b. General exploitation

c. Environment and nature

d. Maritime

e. Lanes and roads

f. Energy production

The amendment establishes a uniform framework for policy and planning provisions in coastal area planning, while the use categories for the creation of coastal area planning are comparable to the land use categories in the main municipal planning defined in the planning regulation no. 90/2013.

Further information on each exploitation category can be found in, on the website of the Icelandic government, which was published there on 16th of February last year.
