Information for Parents of Preschool and Elementary School Children

  • It has been decided that there will be no school activities in Grindavík for the next school year, and the combined schools for preschool and elementary children will be discontinued. Instead, there is an emphasis on children attending schools as close to their homes as possible. Therefore, parents and guardians need to apply for school enrollment for their children in the municipality where they will be residing.

  • With these decisions, the town council aims to promote stability in children's lives and reduce the burden on families. The goal is to ensure a good environment for children and young people for play and learning and to combat social isolation and emotional difficulties. The town council commissioned the School of Education at the University of Iceland to prepare a report on children, their social needs, and schooling in the aftermath of natural disasters, and their decisions are partly based on the findings of the report.

To this end, Grindavík, with government support, offers psychosocial support for children and young people from Grindavík in the form of courses, interviews, and family counseling.
