Grindavík Committee

The Executive Committee for the Issues of Grindavík (Grindarvíkur Committee) is a multi-member and independent government body that has a multi-faceted task in its hands that deals with resolution issues related to the earthquakes at Grindavík.

The main tasks of the committee will include turn to

  • community service

  • supervising the construction and repairs of important infrastructure in Grindavík

  • making a risk assessment for urban areas in Grindavík in cooperation with the National Police Commissioner

  • soil survey

  • to operate a service team where people of Grindvík can get information and advice, among other things, regarding school and leisure activities for children and young people, job search and activity, housing issues and psychological and social support.

The Grindavík Committee manages, organizes and coordinates operations, ensuring efficient operations cooperation with the local government and public bodies and has an overall overview of issues concerning Grindavík.

The municipality of Grindavíkurbær will continue to manage the municipality, personnel management and be responsible for and have full financial management authority over statutory and non-statutory projects not specifically assigned to the Executive Committee.

The Minister of Infrastructure is authorized to entrust the committee with the coordination of projects that may be in the hands of other administrations with the approval of the professional bodies that the field belongs to. The local government of Grindavíkurbær is also authorized to assign certain statutory or non-statutory tasks to the committee.

About committee members

  • Árni Þór Sigurðsson sat in Alþingi for years, but was previously a city representative in Reykjavík for thirteen years and sat for a time on the board of the Union of Icelandic Municipalities. Árni Þór has worked in the foreign service since 2015 and was Iceland's ambassador to Finland, Russia and most recently in Denmark.

  • Guðný Sverrisdóttir was the mayor of Grýtubakka district for almost 27 years, until 2014. Guðný has held numerous positions of trust. She was the chairman for a long time advisory committee of the Municipal Equalization Fund and held those positions until the year 2023.

  • Gunnar Einarsson was mayor of Garðabær for 17 years and before that director of the town's education and culture department. Gunnar has held various positions confidential positions and was, among other things, on the board of the Association of Icelandic Municipalities for twelve years.

Act on Executive Committee

In May 2024, Alþingi approved the Minister of Infrastructure's bill on a special executive committee on the issue of Grindavík, but the committee officially started working on June 1, when the law came into force.

Legislation was prepared in cooperation with the town council of Grindavík, which requested cooperation on arrangements and management arrangements for projects under unusual conditions due to earthworks in Grindavík.

According to the law, the executive committee works temporarily, but the law will expire at the next local government elections in 2026.
