Two district court judges appointed and one appointed

The Minister of Justice has appointed Ólafur Helga Árnason and Stefanía Guðrún Sæmundsdóttir as district court judges with the first position at the Reykjavík District Court as of 18 December 2023.

The Minister of Justice has appointed Ólafur Helga Árnason and Stefanía Guðrún Sæmundsdóttir as district court judges with the first position at the Reykjavík District Court as of 18 December 2023. Furthermore, Finnur Þór Vilhjálmsson has been appointed a judge at the same court from 18 December 2023 until 28 February 2029, on account of the permission of a district court appointed judge.

Ólafur Helgi Árnason completed a diploma in law from the University of Iceland in 1988 and acquired the right to speak before the District Court in 1993 and before the Supreme Court of Iceland in 2008. Since 2015 he has worked as a lawyer in the Office of the State Counsellor, where he has represented a number of cases at all judicial levels. Ólafur worked as a manager in the planning and construction department of Hafnarfjörður in 2008-2015 and at that time he has also worked for the Engineers Pension Fund, The Federation of Icelandic Industries and Landsbanki Íslands Ltd. Ólafur has also taught law at both upper secondary and university levels.

Stefanía Guðrún Sæmundsdóttir completed a diploma in law from the University of Iceland in 1992 and acquired the right to speak before a district court in 1997. In 2012-2015, she served as the Director of Public Prosecutions and was appointed from 1 January 2016. In her work with the Directorate of Public Prosecutions Stefanía has brought a number of cases at all levels of the judiciary that concern almost all categories of offences. Stefanía has also worked at a law firm, representing the Reykjavík magistrate, as a lawyer at the Social Insurance Administration and as a lawyer with the Social Security Appeals Committee. Stefanía has also been teaching basic courses held by the Director of Public Prosecutions for prosecutors and served on the local election board.

Finnur Þór Vilhjálmsson completed a diploma in law from the University of Iceland in 2007 and in the same year acquired the right to speak before the District Court. Since 28 September 2023, Finnur Þór has been appointed a judge at the Reykjavík District Court, where he previously worked, among other things, as a Prosecutor General and Assistant Prosecutor in the Office of the Special Prosecutor, later as District Prosecutor, of which he was appointed Prosecutor General since 2016.

Finnur Þór has also worked as a lawyer for the Office of the Ombudsman of the Althingi and as a member of the Althingi investigation committee on the lead-up to and the demise of Icelandic banks in 2008. He was also a staff member and co-editor of the report of the Althingi Research Committee on the participation of Hauck & Aufhäuser Privatbank KGaA in 2003 in the purchase of the state's holding in Búnaðarbanki Íslands. Finnur Þór has also taught law at the university level.
