The Courts

The district courts are the first of the three judicial levels. All cases are first resolved in the district court. There are eight district courts throughout the country and 42 district judges sit there.

The national court is an intermediate court, but the judgments of the district courts are appealed to the court. Landsrettur is located in the capital area, but serves the entire country. Sixteen judges have a seat at the Landsrett.

The Supreme Court has the highest judicial power and is a precedent-setting court. Cases can only be appealed to the Supreme Court if strict conditions are met. The Supreme Court has seven judges.

A re-opening court is a special court that decides whether to allow re-opening of court cases that have been decided in the District Court, the National Court or the Supreme Court. The Court of Reinstatement consists of five judges, one from each court level and two who are not official judges, as well as five of their deputies.

The Court Administration takes care of and represents the joint administration of all the courts and works towards uniform implementation. In this way, the organization contributes to the courts being able to carry out their role and tasks as best as possible.
