Hákon Þorsteinsson and Oddur Þorri Viðarsson appointed as District Judges

The Minister of Justice has appointed Hákon Þorsteinsson as a judge with the first post at the East Iceland District Court from 1 November. The Minister has also appointed Oddur Thorri Viðarsson as a judge from the same date, who will have a post at the Westfjords District Court, but will work in all the district courts, as determined by the district court.
Hákon Þorsteinsson completed his BA in law from the University of Iceland’s Law School in 2006 and his Master’s degree in law from the same school in 2008. He also completed an additional diploma in public administration from the same school in 2023. Hákon gained the right to practice as a District Court lawyer in 2009 and the legal qualification to practice as a real estate, company and shipping salesman in 2015. After graduating, Hákon worked as a legal consultant for a financial company and as a lawyer in a law firm. In 2010, Hákon began working as an assistant judge at the Reykjanes District Court, where he worked until 2018. In 2018-2021, Hákon worked as an assistant judge at Landsréttur and was appointed as the Director of the Office at the Court at the beginning of 2021. He has also been appointed District Court Judge twice for several months, first at the Reykjanes District Court in 2014 and later as the Chief Justice of the Westfjords District Court in the summer of 2021. Since the autumn of 2021, he has worked as a lawyer at the Office of Legal Affairs and Administration in the Ministry of Justice. Other work includes being a professor and attending classes in law at university level and working for the Football Association of Iceland.
Oddur Þorri Viðarsson completed his BA degree from the University of Iceland’s Law School in 2011 and his Master’s degree in law from the same department in 2014. He also completed an additional diploma in critical thinking and ethics from the University of Iceland and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in applied ethics from the same school. After graduating, Oddur Þorri worked as a representative for a period in a law firm, but in 2015 he began working as a lawyer at the Office of the Prime Minister of Iceland, where he worked until the end of 2021. In 2015-2018, he also worked as secretary of the Information Committee, and in 2019 he was appointed by the Prime Minister as a consultant on public information rights along with other work in the Ministry. Since December 2021, Oddur Þorri has worked as a lawyer at the Office of the Ombudsman of the Icelandic Parliament. Other work includes teaching in law at university level as long as he has worked in the field of law, as well as doing academic writing. He was also appointed as an assessor in the fifth round of audits of the Council of Europe’s Anti-Corruption Association (GRECO) in 2017 and has been a member of the board of the Icelandic Bar Association since the spring of 2023.
