The National Archives reserves various types of personal information in accordance with the law. Some of this information includes sensitive details related to finances and health. The processing of this data—such as registration, preservation, and sharing—is part of the institution’s legal obligations.
The National Archives takes utmost care in handling all personal information. All processing of personal data by the institution must comply with applicable data protection laws and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union.

The National Archives’ Data Protection Policy
The National Archives of Iceland has established a personal data protection policy based on the Act on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data. The policy was approved by the Commission on 17 December 2021. The policy addresses the purpose of the processing of personal data, the handling of sensitive personal data, security and communication. It shall also ensure that all personal data collected, used or otherwise processed by the National Archives are handled in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
