Spacialization in ear, nose and throat medicine
Table of contents
Introduction
Duration: 5 years full-time specialization
The specialist training programme is at least five years beyond the foundation year, providing the necessary training and education to qualify for specialist certification in otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat medicine). Part of this period will be spent gaining skills in related fields, such as audiology (at the Hearing and Speech Centre) and specialties within Landspítali, including plastic surgery, neurosurgery, and allergy medicine. Further subspecialisation is not available in Iceland but should be pursued abroad at larger hospitals with defined subspecialty departments, such as head and neck oncology or otologic surgery.
The curriculum and training are designed to ensure that the trainee becomes fully competent to manage conditions in the specialty across a broad spectrum, including in outpatient clinics, operating theatres, multidisciplinary meetings, and inpatient wards, as well as knowing when it is appropriate to refer cases to a subspecialist.
Training is conducted alongside clinical work in the ENT department at Landspítali, which serves as the main training site, with progressively increasing responsibility and independence in clinical duties under the supervision of the clinical supervisor, programme director, and training committee throughout the training period.
