The Scientific Council is responsible for and oversees the program of the Scientific Festival during the spring. This Scientific Harvest Festival is usually held at the end of April/early May every year.

The Council advertises for posters for the festival in the first months of the year. All posters are reviewed for approval. The festival honors outstanding scientists, awards for scientific projects that are considered outstanding, posters are presented and presentations of selected scientific projects are offered in lecture form and the President of Landspítali officially presents project grants.

The Scientific Council is responsible for selecting the National University Hospital Honorary Scientist, the National University Hospital Young Scientist and which scientific projects receive a recognition award at the National University Hospital's Science Festival, held every spring under the name Science in the Spring Days. The Scientific Council calls for proposals from the employees themselves in connection with the selection of the honorary scientist and the young scientist and the selection is based on the proposals received among other things. The National University Hospital of Iceland’s Science Fund is a strong research fund that provides over 100 million ISK in research grants to the hospital’s employees annually. The fund’s goal is to promote health research at the National University Hospital of Iceland and it is open to all its university educated employees. The Scientific Council oversees and is professionally responsible for all grant allocations from the National University Hospital of Iceland’s Science Fund.
