The symposium was organized by the initiative “Medicines without harm” and was held at the Reykjavík Natura Hotel on 5 October 2023, but participation was also available online.

The goal of the symposium was to raise awareness of the safety of medications in Iceland and to open up a discussion on the importance of regular review of medications in Iceland.

In international context, this awareness has been known as deprescribing but the Icelandic translation of the term and the methodology it refers to is lacking.

The meeting was chaired by Magnús Karl Magnússon, Professor of Pharmaceutical and Toxicology, Faculty of Medicine, HÍ and Jón Steinar Jónsson, Head Physician at the Development Centre for Icelandic Health Care.
