Eating Disorder Team

Services

The Eating Disorder Team provides diagnosis and treatment for severe eating disorders

The team offers three levels of care: outpatient, day program, and inpatient treatment.

  • Outpatient Treatment: Patients attend therapy sessions once or twice a week.

  • Day program: This takes place from 9:00 to 15:30 on weekdays. Patients receive support during meals, attend therapy sessions, and participate in activity exercises.

  • Inpatient Treatment: Provides 24-hour care where patients receive support during all meals, participate in therapy sessions and activities to support daily living.

The duration of treatment with the Eating Disorder Team is individualized and typically lasts between 4 and 12 months.

Treatment with the Eating Disorder Team

All individuals beginning treatment with the Eating Disorder Team undergo a detailed diagnostic interview. Based on this, a treatment plan is created according to their individual needs. Each patient is assigned a therapist for regular sessions but can also meet with other professionals as needed.

Treatment Goals:

  • Address emotional difficulties, cognitive distortions, and unhealthy attitudes toward food and body image.

  • Increase insight and motivation for recovery, as well as healthy lifestyle and eating habits.

  • Treat physical and psychological complications.

  • Build self-esteem and improve communication patterns

Psychological Treatment: Based on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), with an emphasis on changing behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes that maintain eating disorders.

Medical and Nursing Care: Patients receive regular medical check-ups, including blood tests, ECG, and bone density measurements as needed. Medication is prescribed if necessary.

Nutritional support: Dietitians help patients develop healthy eating habits, improve nutritional status and encourage varied food choices.

Family Therapy: Patients and their relatives can participate in family sessions where education, counseling, and support are provided. The focus is on improving communication and finding effective solutions to support the recovery process.

Referrals

Referrals are accepted from healthcare professionals both within and outside the hospital. Individuals seeking counselling or assessment are encouraged to contact their general practitioner, who will evaluate the situation and, if appropriate, send a referral to the Eating Disorders Team at Landspítali.
