Municipal elections 2022
Municipal elections were held on 14 May 2022. Elections took place in 60 municipalities; 47 used a list-based voting system, while 13 had unrestricted elections. In two municipalities, only one list was submitted, resulting in an uncontested election.
These were the first elections in which the National Electoral Commission operated as an established institution, and the first elections conducted under the new election laws passed in 2021. The new laws expanded voting rights for foreign citizens in municipal elections: citizens of the Nordic countries gained the right to vote as soon as they established residence in Iceland, while citizens of other countries gained voting rights after three years of residence.
Voter turnout nationwide was 62.8%. More detailed results and statistics can be found on the website of Statistics Iceland.
