Presidential elections shall take place every four years on the first Saturday of June not falling on the Saturday immediately preceding Whitsun.

In the event of the death of a sitting President or if the President stands down from office before the expiry of the presidential term, a new President shall be elected within one year to sit until 30 June of the fourth year from that election. In such event, the National Electoral Commission shall decide the election day; in other respects, the provisions of this Act shall apply.

All Icelandic citizens who have reached the age of 18 at the time of polling and are domiciled in Iceland are entitled to vote in elections to the Althingi.

Icelandic citizens who have reached the age of 18 and have been domiciled in Iceland are entitled to vote for sixteen years after transferring their domicile from Iceland. After that period, they must apply to Registers Iceland to be added to the electoral register. A decision to add a person’s name to the electoral register shall be valid for four years as of the 1 December immediately following the submission of the application.

Constituency is a geographical delimitation of the area in which a voter exercises the right to vote. There are six constituencies for the President of Iceland, depending on the boundaries of the municipalities, with Reykjavík being divided into two electoral districts:

North-Western Constituency

North-Eastern Constituency

Southern Constituency

South-Western Constituency

Reykjavík South

Reykjavík North

Presidential candidates are required to gather nomination subscribers in four quarters of the country. A presidential candidate must have at least 1500 eligible voters, but no more than 3000.

The National Electoral Commission shall publicise the election no later than three months prior to election day and shall specify the maximum and minimum number of nomination subscribers for a presidential candidate from each quarter of the country proportional to the number of voters there.
