The election day for President is the first Saturday in June, which does not appear on Saturday before Pentecost.

The term of office of the President is four years. If the President dies or resigns before his term of office is complete, a new President shall be elected within a year, serving until 30 June of the fourth year from that election.

Constituency is a geographical delimitation of the area in which a voter exercises the right to vote. There are six constituencies for the President of Iceland, depending on the boundaries of the municipalities, with Reykjavík being divided into two electoral districts:

North-Western Constituency

North-Eastern Constituency

Southern Constituency

South-Western Constituency

Reykjavík South

Reykjavík North

According to the constitution, presidential candidates are required to gather supporting candidates by quarters of four: Southern quarter, Western quarter, Northern landing quarter and Eastfjords quarter. A presidential candidate must have at least 1500 eligible voters, but no more than 3000.

All Icelandic citizens who have reached the age of 18 at the time of polling and are
domiciled in Iceland are entitled to vote in presidential elections.

Icelanders 18 years and older who are domiciled abroad have the right to vote for sixteen years from the date of their emigration if they have ever been domiciled in Iceland. After this time, applications must be submitted to the Registers Iceland to be entered on the electoral roll.

A decision to add a person’s name to the electoral register shall be valid for four years as of the 1 December immediately following the submission of the application.
