Do not delay planting of frozen stored seedlings for too long

It is necessary to look at the relationship between the production processes of forest seedlings nurseries and planting success in afforestation. The later frozen stored seedlings are planted, the more likely they are to fail to form frost hardiness and be subject to damage in the same fall. This is among the research findings discussed in a reviewed article published recently in the scientific journal Forests. The main author of the article is Rakel J. Jónsdóttir, a forester and a postdoctoral researcher at Land and Forest.

These proposals entail legislative modifications that are crucial for the efficient operation of the voluntary market for carbon units. The group's recommendations encompass the formulation of state policies, the implementation of fiscal incentives, and the establishment of a dedicated trading platform for carbon units.

Skemman in Víðidalur in the mountains fell in a storm

The sole remaining structure at the abandoned Víðidalur farm in the Fjöll region of Northeast Iceland succumbed to the recent storm on Wednesday. This corrugated iron-clad wooden building served as a temporary shelter for sheep during the autumn sheep-gathering season. Moving forward, a roofless enclosure will be utilised at the location instead. The debris from the collapsed structure has been largely cleared away, ensuring that any remaining building materials are secured against further dispersal.

Monitoring results on the Álftaver Highland Pasture

One of the initiatives undertaken by Land and Forest Iceland involves assessing the results of land reclamation efforts carried out by farmers engaged in quality-controlled sheep production. These farmers adhere to a land improvement plan as part of their operations. Land and Forest Iceland is responsible for evaluating the land use component of quality-controlled sheep production. This autumn, the inaugural measurements were conducted in accordance with a new work process that provides improved accuracy and more comprehensive information regarding the progress of the reclamation. The enclosed photographs depict the outcomes achieved at Álftaver Highland Pasture since 2017.

A venerable podium back in the woods

Two members of the Reykjavík City Council's gardening department recently paid a visit to the Land and Forest Iceland office in Mógilsá. They presented the office with an old podium, handcrafted for the department years ago from local Icelandic wood.

Land and Forest is looking for strong staff to work on the development and conservation of Icelandic vegetation resources through land reclamation, new forests and forest preservation to promote the economic, environmental and social benefits of sustainable land use. We are now looking for an expert who works with geographical data and databases, as well as geographical analyses. The deadline for applications is 7 October.

Land and forest accepts the Equality Balance Award

In the current year, the FKA Equality Balance Award was presented to an unprecedented number of organisations. A total of 130 entities, including Land and Forest, were honored with the recognition. In collaboration with the Forestry Association of Reykjavík, a symbolic gesture is performed for each recipient. A tree is planted in a dedicated grove, symbolising the commitment to the cause and fostering a sustainable environment.

Hopes for two consecutive years of harvest from the seed fields

The annual seed harvest of red fescue and lyme grass has been concluded by Land and Forest Iceland. While the red fescue harvest met expectations, the lyme grass yields were limited. Ongoing experiments with fertiliser and seed density in the red fescue fields in Gunnarsholt, initiated last year, aim to ensure biennial harvesting, which is currently not a consistent outcome.
