Record Number of people attended the Great Forest Day

30th June 2025

It is estimated that approximately 2,500 individuals were present at the Great Forest Day, which took place on Saturday, June 21st, within the Hallormsstaður National Forest. This attendance figure represents the highest turnout since the inaugural forest event, which was held in this format back in 2005. Furthermore, the National Icelandic Logging Competition this year was won by Sigfús Jörgen Oddsson, a forestry consultant affiliated with Land and Forest Iceland, marking his second time achieving this title.

The Great Forest Day, an annual event, was held for the 19th time, with two prior cancellations attributed to the coronavirus pandemic. The event traditionally featured live musical performances and a large-scale culinary experience. Cattle farmers provided grilled whole bulls for guests, while sheep farmers prepared grilled lamb and sausages, complemented by a tasting selection of pork and sausages presented by the national meat processing team. Beverages included hot coffee brewed the forester's way and fire-baked pancakes, locally known as "lummur."

At the festival, Tandrabretti presented its wood-fired kiln product line within a designated container, including a demonstration of a pizza furnace utilising wood beads as fuel, of course with slices of baked pizzas to taste.

The annual Icelandic Forestry Championship took place as scheduled on Great Forest Day, with Sigfús Jörgen Oddsson, a forester and forestry consultant at Land and Forest Iceland, emerging as the victor. Mr. Oddsson has previously participated in the competition, having won the Icelandic championship in 2017.

On the occasion of the Great Forest Day event, the Bylgjan Radio Channel conducted interviews with various individuals connected to the local forest. The weather in Hallormsstaður was quite pleasant all day, remaining dry until approximately six o'clock, after the event had concluded and all attendees had left.
