Krithóll seedling distribution center refurbished
3rd June 2025
The nationwide distribution of forest seedlings to farmers is currently at its peak. However, there is a slight delay this week due to the current inclement weather, which includes cold northerly winds, heavy rain, and even snow in some areas. A new outdoor area at the Krithóll distribution center in Skagafjörður is now operational.

For many years, a forest seedling distribution center has been located at Krithóll, just south of Varmahlíð village in Skagafjörður. Each year, forest farmers in the fjord have arrived there to collect their allocated seedlings. Anna Ragnarsdóttir and Ólafur Björnsson, who have managed the center for over two decades, are still overseeing operations. They initiated afforestation at Krithóll at the turn of the century; interestingly, the new outdoor area now benefits from the shelter provided by that mature forest.
Due to other farming changes at Krithóll, a new location was sought for the distribution center. A suitable area was found near the northern edge of a larch forest where trees had been damaged by snow. The forest's shelter provides ideal conditions for seedling storage and care.
The Krithóll distribution center will be open for a month, from late May to late June, to facilitate the collection and return of planting trays by forest farmers. Approximately 130,000 plants will be delivered to Skagafjörður forest farmers through the center this year.
The accompanying photographs taken by forestry consultant Sigríður Hrefna Pálsdóttir depict the new distribution center, with Land and Forest Iceland forestry consultant Johan Holst pictured with Krithóll farmers Anna and Ólafur on the prepared gravel site.
