The Minister of Justice has temporarily appointed Svavar Pálsson, the district commissioner of North East Iceland, as the district commissioner of East Iceland from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2025.

District commissioners were tasked with overseeing the digital implementation of the project, which enabled residents of Grindavík to sell their housing to the government under certain conditions. Applicants could subsequently fill out an application on Ísland.is.

In October 2023 pre-registration and payment for passport applications became available on island.is. Since then, approximately 7,000 people have applied for a passport electronically, or about half of applicants.

All processes concerning driving students, driving instructors and driving schools for applications for driving studies have now been digitised and paper applications have now largely ceased. This simplifies and makes the processes more efficient, reduces the waiting time at the District Commissioners offices and reduces the number of trips that applicants often have to travel a long distance to the District Commissioners office on these occasions.
