Information Page on the Merger of District Commissioner Offices

15th April 2026

A special information page has been set up on Ísland.is in connection with the merger of the District Commissioner offices, which will take effect on 1 January 2027.

The goal of the merger is to improve services for the public, maximize the use of the financial resources allocated to the District Commissioner, and work systematically toward the objectives set out in the regional development plan and the government’s policy priorities. Today, there are nine District Commissioner offices located across the country. When the merger takes effect, the local offices are expected to continue operating, and services will remain largely unchanged.

However, the merger will create increased opportunities to harmonize services and improve access regardless of residence, strengthen operations, and safeguard services and jobs in rural areas.
