New Director of the Surveillance Division

Vidar Olason has been appointed the position of Director of Surveillance Division, which was advertised recently, while Elin Bjorg, the outgoing Director of the Surveillance Division, has taken over the job of Director general of the Directorate of Fisheries.

Vidar has a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Reykjavík University. In addition, he is a certified captain from the School of Navigation and has attended numerous courses in the fields of management and administrative law.

Vidar has 20 years of experience in the fishing industry. He has been the Head of the Department of Surveillance at Sea at the Directorate of Fisheries since 2016, responsible for managing sea surveillance, and served as the substitute for the Head of the Department of Port Surveillance. Before joining Fiskistofa, Vidar worked as a software engineer at Advania for many years and has extensive experience as a seaman, primarily as a first officer and captain.

Viðar has participated in various domestic and international committees, working groups, and consultation meetings regarding fisheries management and surveillance. He has also carried out and participated in numerous international projects. Viðar will lead the 11th International Fisheries Observer and Monitoring Conference, which will be held in Harpa in May 2025.
