New Catch registration system implemented, GAFL bids farewell after 18 years
28th November 2025
As of the 1st of December, the Directorate of Fisheries new Catch registration system will fully take over catch registration in the countries ports.

The cornerstone of fisheries management bids farewell
Since 2007, GAFL catch registration system has played a key role in registering catches in Icelandic ports. In these 18 years, nearly one million landings have been registered in GAFL, or 926,210 landings to be exact.
It is therefore safe to say that GAFL has been the cornerstone of the Icelandic fisheries management system and has been crucial for correct catch registration and sustainable use of fish stocks.
Simpler, more accessible, and more transparent
Times change and demands increase. The Directorate of Fisheries has therefore completed the design and programming of a new catch registration system that will completely replace GAFL from 1st of December, 2025.
The new system was designed in close collaboration with users (port employees), and an effort was made to accommodate their requests, comments, and suggestions.
The main objectives of the new system are:
To be more accessible and simpler to use.
To provide even better support for correct catch registration.
To increase transparency in processes.
Implementation to be completed by 1st of December
On 1st of December, the implementation of the new catch registration system will be completed in all ports and the GAFL system will shut down at the same time.
The Directorate of Fisheries would like to thank the Icelandic Port Association and port employees for their good and pleasant cooperation in the design and testing of the new catch registration system.
