Job in the Surveillance Division

The Directorate of Fisheries is looking to hire an individual for a full-time position in the surveillance division at our office in Akureyri.

The Directorate of Fisheries is looking for a driven, solution-oriented, and ambitious individual with an interest in and experience of the fishing industry. We are looking for an applicant with a good basic knowledge of fishing industry operations and a willingness to adopt digital solutions that support our monitoring work.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • At sea Surveillance: Inspection trips with vessels of all sizes and types with fishing permits in the Icelandic jurisdiction, including one trip on a processing vessels per year. Inspection trips at sea include monitoring discard, performing length measurements of fish and other marine organisms. Monitoring of catch logbook entries and making recommendations for closures of fishing areas.

  • Onshore surveillance: Monitoring of landings and weighing of catches on at landing harbor and and at facilities of home weighing license holders. Length measurements and data registration, and audit of products from processing vessels. Use of remotely piloted aircraft.

  • Office work: Report writing, analysis of video material, data entry and processing of information for infringement cases.

  • Other tasks: The surveillance department also carries out tasks related to salmon and trout fishing at sea as well as monitoring collection of materials in fishing lakes.

Qualification requirements

  • Relevant education for the position.

  • Solid experience and knowledge of the fishing industry.

  • Experience in seamanship.

  • Good computer skills.

  • Good Icelandic skills.

  • Good English skills is an advantage.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Physical and mental capacity to handle diverse tasks.

  • Clean criminal record.
