GRÓ Fisheries Training Programme

3rd February 2026

Last January, the Directorate of Fisheries took part in teaching within the framework of the Fisheries Training Programme (FTP) at GRÓ – The Centre for Capacity Development under the auspices of UNESCO.

GRÓ FTP is part of Iceland's international development cooperation, which aims to promote sustainable fisheries and improved resource management. The University of Akureyri leads the teaching, and the programme is intended to enhance the skills and knowledge of people from developing countries in the sustainable use of marine and freshwater resources.

In recent years, the Directorate of Fisheries has participated in the programme by presenting Iceland's fisheries management system and providing insight into the implementation and operations of the Directorate of Fisheries. Through our participation in this international collaboration, the Directorate strengthens its connections with professionals worldwide and contributes to strengthening the capacity of other nations for sustainable resource management.

This time, participants came from Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ghana, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Panama, and Indonesia.

In the accompanying photo, some of the participants can be seen getting a little insight into the use of surveillance drones from two of the Directorate of Fisheries' inspectors in the winter weather in Akureyri, which is undoubtedly quite different from the weather they are used to back home.
