Important Information Regarding the Upcoming Fishing Year

2026

New fishing year begins on 1st of September, and we encourage stakeholders to familiarize themselves with the applicable regulations as they are published in section B of the Government Gazette.

Quota Allocation

At the end of August, the Directorate of Fisheries will allocate quotas to vessels with quota shares. Notifications to operators will be sent to their digital mailboxes on Island.is, and allocations will be published on the Directorate’s data pages.

Transfers

Requests for transfer of quota shares, along with all supporting documents, must be received no later than 31st of July at millifaerslur@fiskistofa.is if they are to be taken into account in the allocation of the next fishing year.

Further information on required documentation:

It is permitted to transfer catch quotas for the fishing year 2025/2026 in the Directorate’s electronic transfer system until 15th of september.

Switching Between Systems

At the turn of the fishing year, vessels are permitted to switch between the hook-and-line quota system and general quota system. Vessels in the hook-and-line system that hold quota shares must transfer all quota shares before switching systems.

Requests for system changes must be sent by email to fiskistofa@fiskistofa.is before 1st of September.

Fishing Obligation

It is important to monitor the fishing obligation status of vessels. Vessels that have not fulfilled their fishing obligation by 1st of September will lose all quota shares assigned to them.

The Directorate may grant an exemption from the fishing obligation if the vessel has been out of operation for at least four months due to damage, major breakdowns, or renovations.

A request for exemption must be sent to fiskistofa@fiskistofa.is along with sufficient documentation to demonstrate the damage, breakdown, or renovations.
