Digital Iceland launched a new public-sector login service in 2021, designed to replace the older login service. The goal of the renewal is first and foremost to ensure data security, transparency in services for vulnerable groups, and scalability of technical services needed in modern environments. Shortly the new login service will take over the older one altogether.

The older login service of Digital Iceland was launched around the economic collapse in 2008 and the IceKey was added as a possible login option in 2013.

The earlier login service was scheduled to close on the 2nd of September and this decision was announced in December 2023. To accommodate vulnerable groups, the login service will be closed in two phases, which will occur on the 2nd of September 2024 and 1 October. This will require private parties and organisations, which use the earlier login service at no cost, to purchase solutions on the market for electronic identification and the state will stop paying the cost of electronic identification for these parties.

Phase One – will be implemented on the 2nd of September 2024

  • The service will be closed to those parties who have not used the IceKey part of the older login service.

Phase II – will occur on the 1st of October 2024

  • From October 1st, it will be possible to visit a service center and present a mandate on paper for central registration, e.g. at one of the public service centers that already operate in many parts of the country. This will resolve the issue of those who cannot obtain electronic IDs being able to provide a mandate.

  • The closing of the older login service is complete and closes. In that case, it will no longer be possible to use the IceKey for login.

It is important to note that the closing of the older Digital Iceland login service does not affect the general use of electronic IDs for example banking services.

Improvements are constantly being made in the accessibility of digital public services.
