Increased follow-up on requirements for the registration on passenger vessels and passenger boats as of 1 June 2026
As of 1 June 2026, follow-up on the following existing requirements for the registration of crews on passenger vessels and passenger boats will be increased, and their implementation will be formally integrated into the seafarers’ registration system, Skútan. The aim is to ensure a harmonised application of regulations and to further strengthen the safety of passengers and crew.

The requirements include the following:
Masters of passenger vessels and passenger boats must hold a valid radiocommunication certificate in order to be registered. This refers to either a General Operator’s Certificate (GOC) or a Restricted Operator’s Certificate (ROC), depending on the vessel’s sea area of operation.
All crew members working on passenger vessels and passenger boats must also hold a valid seafarer medical certificate in order to be eligible for registration.
These requirements must be met to complete registration in the system and to maintain registration.
Further information is available in Skútan, the system for vessel registration and seafarers registration.
