Easier to replace or update your driver’s licence

It is now easier to get a copy or update an older driving licence. A new and improved application process saves you a trip, and many can now complete the application entirely online, without having to visit a District Commissioner.

Around 3,800 reprints (duplicates) of driving licences are ordered annually, for example, if a driving licence is lost or if the number, photograph or stamp is illegible.

If you have a photo of yourself in the national ID registry, for example from a passport, you can use that photo directly in the application if it meets the age requirements and your driving entitlements do not need to be renewed in the next 6 months. In that case, there is no need to submit a new photograph or a signature sample at a District Commissioner's office.

What does this mean for me?

You save time and a trip to the District Commissioner.

  • You can apply anywhere and at any time.

  • The application process is simpler and faster.

  • It is easier to update an older type of driving licence or an unclear photograph.

Analysis shows that around 76,000 individuals in Iceland still have an older type of driving licence. They can use this new application to update their driving license without visiting a District Commissioner.

The aim of this change is to improve accessibility to the service, shorten processing times and make the process more user-friendly. At the same time, it reduces queues and the workload at District Commissioners' front desks. If you do not have a suitable photo in the national ID registry, you can still apply for a duplicate at a District Commissioner's office according to the previous process.

Clear benefits

Please note that those who still have the older pink cardboard driving licenses do not have a digital driving licence. By updating your driving licence:

  • you will also get a digital driving licence, which will update automatically.

  • you can use digital services, for example, register as a supervising driver for learner drivers.

  • you will avoid the limitations of older cardboard licences or an inadequate photo.
