Application for a copy of a driver's license

Do not apply for a copy if license or any of it´s categories are close to expiration date. Then the renewal process is needed.

Application process

The applicant logs in with their electronic ID and confirms that an older driving license is lost or stolen. If the license photo is quality marked in the register, the photo appears in the application process along with the signature. It is necessary to check carefully if the applicant has changed their name since their last driving license was produced, or if an image is too old. Then the applicant must attend at a District Commissioner´s office with a new photo and provide a new signature. The photo must be on photographic paper, sized 35x45 mm and a monochrome background.

Processing and Delivery Procedure

The processing time for driver’s licenses is up to 7 working days from when the application is received and the license is ordered.

A driver’s license can be delivered in the following ways:

Sent by mail (postal fee applies)

Picked up at the district commissioners’ service desks.

The digital driver’s license is updated in the Ísland.is app as soon as the license is ordered. It is possible to request a temporary driving permit on paper, for example if someone is obtaining additional driving entitlements or does not have electronic identification.

Lost driving license

If a driving license is lost, or is so badly damaged that endorsement, number, stamp or photograph are poorly visible, a copy of the driving license must be applied for if the physical license card is needed, for example if driving abroad is intended. If a lost driving license is found, it must be handed over to the District Commissioner or the police.

Foreign driving licenses

You cannot apply for a copy if you have a foreign driving license. If a driving license from another EEA country has been lost or stolen, you must first inform the police and, if your legal domicile is in Iceland, you must bring a copy of the report to the District Commissioner's office and apply for an exchange into an Icelandic license. An Icelandic license will then be issued when driving rights have been confirmed from country of issue.
