Get a copy (duplicate) of a lost or stolen driving licences

Do not apply for a copy if your driving license or any of its categories are close to their expiration date. Instead, follow the driving license renewal process.

If a driving license is lost or so badly damaged that endorsements, numbers, stamps, photographs or other information are difficult to read, a copy of the driving license must be applied for.

Please note that you must always carry your physical driving license card when driving abroad.

If a lost driving license is found, it must be handed over to the District Commissioner or the police.

Application process

The applicant logs in with their electronic ID and confirms that their previous driving license has been lost, stolen or damaged.

If a valid photograph is available in the identity document register (from a passport or national ID card) that meets the age requirements, and/or a photograph from the most recently issued driving license is available, the photographs will automatically appear in the application process along with the signature.

The applicant can select which photograph to use for the driving license without having to submit a new photograph or signature to a District Commissioner.

During the application process, the applicant can choose to have the driving license sent to their registered address or delivered to a District Commissioner's service desk.

A new photograph must be submitted if:

• The photograph in the identity document register is too old according to the following age requirements:

  • Ages 16–17: No more than 1 year old

  • Age 18: No more than 2 years old

  • Age 19: No more than 3 years old

  • Age 20: No more than 4 years old

  • Age 21: No more than 5 years old

  • Age 22: No more than 6 years old

  • Ages 23–24: No more than 7 years old

  • Ages 25–26: No more than 9 years old

  • Ages 26 and over: No more than 10 years old

• The applicant has changed their name or gender. In this case, identity documents must be renewed before a photograph from the identity document register can be used. Alternatively, the applicant must attend a District Commissioner's office with a new photograph and provide a new signature.

• The applicant does not meet the requirements for the issuance of Icelandic identity documents.

If no photograph appears in the application process, or if electronic ID is not available, a paper application must be submitted to a District Commissioner's office along with a new passport photograph. The applicant must also provide a signature.

The photograph must:

• Be printed on photographic paper

• Be sized 35 × 45 mm

• Have a plain, white background.

Processing and Delivery Procedure

The processing time for driving licenses is up to 7 working days from when the application is received and the license is ordered.

A driving license can be delivered in the following ways:

• Sent by mail (postal fee applies)

• Picked up at the district commissioners' service desks.

The digital driver's license is updated in the Ísland.is app as soon as the license is ordered.

It is possible to request a temporary driving permit on paper, for example if someone is obtaining additional driving entitlements or does not have electronic identification.

Foreign driving licenses

You cannot apply online for a copy if you have a foreign driving license.
If a driving license from another EEA country has been lost or stolen, you must first inform the police and bring confirmation of the report to a District Commissioner's office when applying for a copy.
A copy of the driving license will be issued once the applicant's driving entitlements have been confirmed by the country of issue.
