Bjarni Þór Austfirðingur of the Year
Readers of the local media Austurfrétt voted Bjarni Thor Haraldsson Man of the Year in East Iceland for his relentless job organising rock concerts and other events to support of mental health issues in the region. Bjarni Thor is project manager for digital solutions at Land and Forest Iceland.
Bjarni Þór lives and works in Egilsstaðir and is working with his colleagues to unify various digital systems of the institutions that at the turn of the year merged into Land and Forest Iceland. But Bjarni has more to offer. Among many other things he has organised rock concerts with young East Icelandic musicians and other events to promote mental health issues in the region.
“I swear I didn’t expect this. I can admit that my first thought was that I didn’t deserve this. There were many other great people nominated. Apart from that, there are so many people who have made this idea what it has become, the band and others,” says Bjarni Þór in an interview with Austurfrétt.
Austurfrétt reports that Bjarni started the concerts in order to give young people the opportunity to perform. Then the thought of doing good came into the picture. Mental health is a different category from other health issues and there is often a long wait for help. Bjarni and others organized a seminar on mental health last year and a similar event is planned this year.
Landogskogur.is congratulates Bjarni on his nomination!
