Monitoring by the Directorate of Fisheries with salmon and trout fishing

The Directorate of Fisheries monitors salmon and trout fishing and related activities.

Main monitoring tasks

  • Prohibition of salmon fishing at sea

  • Net fishing of sea run trout at sea

  • Constructions and mining affecting fishing rivers and lakes

  • Escapees from fish farms

  • Fisheries enhancement of Freshwater Fisheries Associations /fishing rights holders

  • Aerial surveillance in cooperation with the Icelandic Coast Guard

Inspectors' authorisations

Inspectors from the Directorate of Fisheries are authorised to:

  • have free access along rivers and lakes

  • have access to net-laying sites at sea

  • confiscate illegal fishing gear

  • confiscate fishing equipment used at a prohibited time or in a prohibited place
