Monitoring by fishing associations and fishing rights owners

Freshwater Fisheries Associations/fishing rights owners are responsible for monitoring fishing activities within their waters and for covering the costs of such monitoring.

The Directorate of Fisheries may appoint inspectors for monitoring in salmon and trout rivers when requested by a Freshwater Fisheries Associations/fishing rights owners. Inspectors are appointed with a formal letter of authorization.

Inspectors' authorisations

Inspectors are authorized to:

  • have free access along rivers and lakes

  • have free access to designated coastal net fishing areas

  • confiscate illegal fishing gear

  • confiscate gear used during prohibited periods or in unauthorized locations
