Applications for exemptions from the rules on the length, width, height, total weight and axle weight of a vehicle may be submitted to the Icelandic Transport Authority. If exempted transports are frequent within a certain area, and in special cases between areas, a long-term exemption may be issued.
Long-term exemptions apply when:
The total height of the load is 4.60 meters or less
The total width of the load is 3.49 meters or less
The total length of the vehicle combination (truck + trailer) is 25.25 meters or less
The total weight is 60 tons or less
Maps of defined areas can be found on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.
Each application is evaluated but no long-term exemption is given for transportation that requires police approval.
Long-term exemptions can be valid from one month up to one year. In other respects, the same rules apply as to other exemptions.
