Limited area of operation of recreational craft

If there is any difference between the Icelandic and the English text, the Icelandic version is valid.

Limited operational area

Limited area of operational is a designated geographical area of the sea where the craft is permitted to navigate, taking into account the craft's construction, condition, size and equipment. The Icelandic Transport Authority has defined four areas of opeation as "limited areas of operation". These are the waters in the inner part of Faxaflói Bay, in the southern part of Breiðafjörður Bay, in the southern part of Ísafjörður and in Eyjafjörður.

Classification of operational areas

There are three different categories of areas of operation:

  • ocean voyages - highest safety equipment requirements

  • near-coastal voyages

  • limited area of operation - minimum requirements for live-saving and safety appliances

Minimum requirements for live-saving and safety appliances are set for the smallest ships and for those authorised to operate only in a defined near-coastal areas.

The following charts show the limited areas of operation that have been defined. The red dashed lines indicate its outer limits. Authorisation to sail a recreational craft with a limited range of craft extends to the area within that line.
