A kilometer fee must be paid for vehicles over 10 tons that are temporarily in Iceland. The fee is based on the weight of the vehicle and the number of kilometers driven. The driven distance is calculated from the odometer readings logged on the arrival and departure dates.
If the vehicle tows a trailer that is not equipped with a mileage meter, the vehicle's odometer will count for both the vehicle and the trailer. The responsibility for payment for the trailer being towed lies with the person who receives the authorization for its temporary use in Iceland.

The maximum chargeable weight standards apply to vehicles with a permissible total weight of 10 tons or more.
Although the chargeable weight of a vehicle is generally defined as the permissible total weight upon registration, the chargeable weight for a vehicle that is 10 tons or more in permissible total weight shall be limited to the maximum chargeable weight. This maximum weight then serves as the basis for calculating the kilometer fee.
