Grants for the preparation and filing of patent applications, both for priority applications and applications in the international process.

  • Patent grants are available either to prepare and submit a priority application or to prepare and submit an application in the international process.

  • A condition is that the patent contributes to value creation within Iceland.

  • The maximum grant for a priority application is ISK 600,000.

  • The maximum grant for an international application is ISK 1,400,000.

  • Payments are made according to invoices (excluding VAT) from recognized patent experts and for public fees.

  • A minimum co-funding requirement of 50% of the invoiced amount applies.

  • The confirmation is valid for one year.

Who can apply?

Applicants for patent grants can be small and medium-sized enterprises, individuals, research institutions, and universities with projects aimed at fostering innovation in Icelandic industry.

How to apply

Support for a priority application and an international application must be requested before it is submitted to authorized parties.

Applications are submitted through the Rannís electronic application system.

Applications are open at all times.

The application should include a description of the problem to be solved. Note that technical details (requirements) forming the basis of the patent are not requested.

Applications, including attachments and evaluation forms, are classified as confidential documents. All parties involved in the processing and evaluation of applications at the Technology Development Fund are bound by confidentiality.
