Periodic training for drivers
Professional drivers driving C, C1, D1 and D1 cars must complete periodic training in the five years preceding renewal to get the 95 code on their license. Drivers of large vehicles have a lot of responsibility, but the aim of the courses is to promote professional drivers as a profession and increase road safety. Professional registration work as professional drivers within the EES area.
Who needs periodic training?
All drivers with category C, C1, D and D1 licences who wish to maintain the 95 code on their licenses. Drivers can see the status of their training here. If nothing after logging in, no courses are valid or have yet to be registered by the training center.
Who does not need periodic training?
Those who use their rights solely for driving for their own benefit.
Taxi drivers (cars of category B only).
Drivers riding ambulances or rescue teams.
The courses
There are five courses, total of 35 hours. The courses are taught at training centers approved by the Icelandic Transportation Authority.
Core (all take)
eco driving - driving safety
laws and rules
traffic safety - car technology
Optional kernel (select one or take both):
passenger transport
freight transport
One selective course (not needed if both passenger transport and freight transport are selected):
first aid
professionalism
other things on offer with the course holder
For further information on the courses, see the curriculum.
Cost
The cost of each course may vary between training centers. A medical certificate and a new licence shall also have to be paid for upon renewal. It should be noted that most of the unions subsidise the cost of study fees.
Renewal of license
It is important to go to the district commissioner and renew the licence after the courses have been completed. This does not happen automatically. When renewing, a medical certificate must always be submitted.
If more than two years have passed since the licence expired, a practical test must be taken at Frumherji.
