Fishing for common whelk is subject to a special fishing permit from the Directorate of Fisheries. This permit is issued for one fishing year.
Conditions
Vessels must have a general fishing permit
A contract for processing must be available or an equivalent declaration in the case of self-processing.
The processing plant needs to be validated by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, MAST.
Fishing is only allowed in areas that have been health checked by Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, MAST
Fishing gear
Hook and line boats with common whelk fishing licences can fish with common whelk traps.
It is not permitted to have other fishing equipment on board than plows and traps.
Revocation of permit
The Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries is authorized to instruct the Directorate of Fisheries to revoke all permits for common whelk fishing if there is reason to limit the fishing or reorganize its management
Payment for permits is during application process. The permit costs 22.000 ISK
