Married Icelandic mother, child born 1964-1982
A child born before 1 July 1982 in wedlock to a mother who is an Icelandic citizen and a father who is a foreign citizen did not automatically acquire Icelandic citizenship at birth.
On 1 July 1982, a provision was added to the Icelandic Nationality Act that allows people born in the period from 1 July 1964 to 30 June 1982 to acquire Icelandic citizenship by submitting a written request to the Directorate of Immigration.
Requirements
The applicant must have been born between 1 July 1964 and 30 June 1982.
The applicant has an Icelandic mother and a foreign father who were married at the time of their birth.
The applicant's mother held Icelandic citizenship from the child's birth until at least 1 July 1982.
The applicant meets the legal requirements for retaining Icelandic citizenship after the age of 22.
Application
Applications can only be submitted in paper form, either to the drop box in the lobby of the Directorate of Immigration at Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur, or by sending the application by regular mail to the same address. Applications can also be submitted at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.
Fee
The processing fee is 13.500 ISK. The notification will not be processed until payment has been received. Read on how to pay the processing fee via bank transfer.
