Unmarried Icelandic father, child born abroad 1998-2018
A child born abroad between 1 October, 1998, and 1 July, 2018, out of wedlock to an Icelandic father and a foreign mother, does not automatically acquire Icelandic citizenship at birth.
A father who is an Icelandic citizen can request that his child be granted Icelandic citizenship by notification if the child is not yet 18 years old.
Requirements
The child was born abroad between 1 October 1998 and 1 July 2018.
The child is not yet 18 years old when the application is submitted.
The child has an Icelandic father and a foreign mother who were unmarried at the time of the child's birth.
The parents have not married after the child's birth (does not apply if the child was born between 1 October 1998 and 17 April 2007).
Application
Applications can only be submitted in paper form, either to the drop box in the lobby of the Directorate of Immigration at Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur, or by sending the application by regular mail to the same address. Applications can also be submitted at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.
Fee
The processing fee is 13.500 ISK. The notification will not be processed until payment has been received. Read on how to pay the processing fee via bank transfer.

Checklist for notification of a child born abroad. Please print out the checklist and include it with the application. Tick the boxes for the documents that are included and arrange them in the same order as on the checklist.
Application in its original form, duly completed and signed by the applicant.
Confirmed copy of the original birth certificate of the applicant.
The original shall be legally authenticated, either with apostille or double authentication.Confirmed copy or original translation by an authorized translator of the birth certificate.
Applies only if the foreign certificate is in other languages than English or a Nordic language.Copy of the father's passport. A copy of the signature page must be included.
Copy of the mother's passport. A copy of the signature page must be included.
Mother's marital status certificate. The original shall be legally authenticated, either with apostille or double authentication.
Certified copy or original of a translation of the mother's marital status certificate by an authorized translator. Only applies if foreign certificates are in a language other than English or a Nordic language.
Mother's written consent on the application form or an original certified declaration from her stating that she consents to the child acquiring Icelandic citizenship. The mother's declaration must be certified by the competent authorities in her home country.
