Children's domicile and its effects

Agreement on the domicile of a child

Parents with joint custody may request to transfer their children's legal domicile between parents and at the same time transfer child/children child maintenance payments to a new legal parent.

If there is an agreement on transfer and child maintenance, an agreement can be prepared here at Iceland.is, which both parents sign electronically and are subject to a confirmation process with the District Commissioner. If the District Commissioner confirms the agreement, the confirmation is sent to the mailbox of both parents on Iceland.is.

A contract on domicile may be permanent (until the age of 18 of the child) or temporary, but not for less than 6 months. After this period, the legal domicile of the child(s) shall be restored. The National Registry must be notified of the relocation of the legal domicile of a child. It is sufficient that the parent to whom a child is to be transferred again signs such a transfer notice to the National Registry.
