Althingi can grant Icelandic citizenship by law.
A special application form is used for a request for parliamentary procedure. Applicants must give general information about themselves and their family situation and a concise reasoning must be provided for the request to Althingi for an exemption from the Icelandic Nationality Act. In addition to the reasoning, applicants are free to submit a more detailed explanation of the reasons for the request for exemption.
Application
Applications can only be submitted on paper.
They can either be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s reception at Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur. It is necessary to first pay the processing fee by bank transfer and submit the payment receipt with the application for confirmation, see information on how to pay the processing fee.
Applications can also be handed in and paid for in the Directorate’s reception.
Fee
The fee for an application for Icelandic citizenship is 27 000 ISK. Only one fee is paid, even though applications are also made for children. An application is not processed until payment has been received.
