Aeronautical engineers, Part-66 licence

Application EASA form 19

Those who wish to certify maintenance of aircraft that have a valid type certificate issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) must hold an aircraft maintenance licence, known as a Part-66 licence.

Support staff in categories B1, B2 and B3 who carry out base maintenance on such aircraft must also hold a Part-66 licence.

Support staff must also have a type rating for the aircraft being worked on.

To obtain an EASA Part-66 aircraft maintenance licence, the applicant must demonstrate, by examination, knowledge of the relevant modules by submitting a Certificate of Recognition. Such a Certificate of Recognition is issued by an approved EASA Part-147 maintenance training organisation and confirms knowledge of the relevant modules.

The certificate must not be older than ten years when applying for a Part-66 licence. All practical experience must also have been completed within that period.

If the certificate is older than ten years, the training must be assessed again separately. The certificate states which basic training was completed, for example B1.1 or B2, and whether full aircraft maintenance training was completed, that is both practical and theoretical training, known as a basic training course, or whether only the basic examination was passed.

The applicant must also demonstrate practical experience after completing the training or after passing the examination. The length of the practical experience varies depending on which basic privileges are being applied for and must represent a typical cross-section of aircraft maintenance tasks, as applicable.

When applying for an initial aircraft maintenance licence, at least one year of the required experience must be recent experience.

When applying for additional categories or subcategories to an existing aircraft maintenance licence, at least three months of the required experience must be recent experience.

Applications and supporting documents for Part-66 licences, additional categories, subcategories or ratings shall be submitted electronically to part66@icetra.is
