Adoption grant

Parents who have received pre-approval for adoption from a country outside Iceland are entitled to an adoption grant.

Requirements

  • The child or children must be primary adopted. This means that the child is not a child of, or adopted by, an applicant's confirmed partner or cohabiting partner.

  • Parents have a registered domicile in Iceland, according to the Registers Iceland.

  • Adoption of a child from a country other than Iceland must have been confirmed in Iceland, or a permit issued, in accordance with the law on adoption.

Rights

Parents who have been issued a pre-approval in accordance with the law on adoption are entitled to an adoption grant.

The right expires after six months from the moment the adoption is confirmed in Iceland or the adoption permit is issued.

This right is not transferable.

Apply

Applications are made within six months of the adoption being confirmed in Iceland or the adoption permit issued in Iceland. The application shall be accompanied by the following documents:

  1. Adoptive pre-approval issued by the District Commissioner under the Act on Adoption.

  2. Certificate of adoption, issued by a public institution, in the adopting country, stamped and endorsed by the District Commissioner.

Payment

The adoption grant is a single payment, the amount is 823,108 ISK. The amount is fixed for one child.

If adoptive parents have adopted more than one child at the same time, a grant for each child in excess of one is granted, amounting to 20% of the above amount. That is, if the children are two, the grant will be ISK 987,730, et cetera.

  • The amount of the grant is reviewed in the context of the public pudgetary procedure every two years.

  • Adoptive support is exempt from the payment of tax.
