Validity of aviation ratings

Class ratings

Single engine piston/SEP)

The single-pilot single-engine class rating (SEP) shall be valid for a period of two years. In order to extend a SEP rating before it expires, the licence holder must fulfil one of the following conditions:

  • Pass a proficiency check with an examiner within three months of the rating expiry date.

  • Completing 12 hours of flight time in the relevant class within 12 months before the rating expires, including

    • 12 take-offs and 12 landings;

    • 6 hours of flight time as PIC; and

    • At least 1 hour of training flight with an FI (applicants who have passed a skill test or proficiency check for another class or type rating are exempted from needing training with an instructor)

Applicants holding both a SEP rating and a motor glider (TMG) rating may fulfil the above requirements in either class or in a combination thereof, and may be revalidated on both ratings.

Single-pilot multi-engine piston

The single-pilot multi-engine class rating shall be valid for one year. In order to extend that rating before its expiry, the holder must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Pass a proficiency check within three months of the rating expiry date; and

  • Complete at least ten flights in an aircraft of the relevant class or one flight with an examiner (this may be carried out during the proficiency check).

Validity period of the instrument rating (IR)

The IR shall be valid for one year. A proficiency check for the revalidation of an IR is completed concurrently with a skill test or a proficiency check for a class or type rating.

Renewal of expired rating

If the rating has expired, a review/assessment of the review at the flight school is required before contacting the examiner to book a skill test (pdf). The FI may also assess the need for refresher training if the SEP rating has expired for less than 3 years. Review/review data must be included in the skill test report.

The validity period of a rating is indicated on the certificate. If a rating or its extension/renewal has not been endorsed on the certificate, it cannot be considered valid, and the associated privileges cannot be exercised, even if the requirements for extension/renewal have been met.
