Car dealerships can use trial number plates to transport unregistered vehicles between locations for registration purposes, for test driving or for promotional activities.
Transportation for registration: The vehicle may be transported from the port to the importers storage place, between storage facilities and for inspection.
Test drive: Trial number plates may be used on a vehicle during a test drive. Vehicles with a trial number plates may not be used outside the opening hours of the dealership and the vehicle can not be parked by residential properties in the evening or overnight.
Promotional activities: Trial number plates may be used on vehicles used for promotional activities, advertising and press loans.
Car dealerships, car dealers, shipping companies and car repair shops are among those who can rent trial number plates for one year at a time.
Cost
A fee shall be paid in accordance with the tariff of the Icelandic Transport Authority. The trial number must have liability insurance.
Individuals cannot apply for a trial number but can apply for temporary number plates in order to transport the vehicle to an inspection station.
