Application Process and Supporting Documents

Before your studies begin, you must apply electronically for the study authorisation. This is done by filling out an application for a driving study at the top of the page.

• Apply for a permit (the applicant must apply personally with electric ID)

• Choose a driving instructor

• If you answer “yes” to one or more health-related questions in the application, a medical certificate must be attached.

Requirements for Issuing a BE Driving License

To obtain a BE driving license, you must:

• Have reached the age 18

• Hold a full (non-provisional) driving license

• Have adequate vision and hearing

• Be physically and mentally competent to operate a car

• Have a permanent residence in Iceland

• Have passed a practical driving test conducted by a certified examiner

BE Driving License Category

A BE license entitles you to:

• Drive a category B vehicle with a trailer or coupling device with a maximum authorized mass of up to 3,500 kg

• The permitted towing capacity must always be verified in the vehicle’s registration certificate

• The maximum authorized mass (total weight) of the trailer applies, not its actual weight

Processing and Delivery

The processing time for a driving license is up to 7 working days from the time the test is completed and the license is ordered.

You can receive your license in the following ways:

• Delivered by mail (postal fee applies)

• Pick up at your chosen District Commissioner’s office

The digital driver‘s license is updated in the Ísland.is app as soon as the license is ordered. A temporary driving permit on paper can be requested if, for example, additional driving rights are being added or if the applicant does not have electronic ID.

Cost

The cost of training and testing depends on the pricing of driving schools and examination centers. The fee for a BE application and driver‘s license is 8.600 ISK.
