Submitting a Customs Declaration
Companies importing goods must submit a customs declaration to Iceland Revenue and Customs.
The importer may appoint a customs broker to handle the import process and customs declaration or apply for permission to submit customs declarations electronically. Up to 12 paper declarations may be submitted per year.
If you are importing goods temporarily into Iceland, you must apply for temporary import exemption from import duties.
How does the process work?
You submit a customs declaration electronically to Iceland Revenue and Customs.
The declaration must be submitted before or upon the arrival of the goods in Iceland.
The declaration is considered received once it has been registered in the customs authorities’ system.
The goods are processed through customs if all information is correct and complete.
To avoid delays in processing
Delays may occur if the customs declaration is incomplete, unclear or incorrectly completed.
You can speed up the process by:
having invoices, certificates of origin and all required documents and permits ready before the shipment arrives
using a customs broker, as they specialize in customs clearance, know the system and can significantly speed up the process
ensuring that tariff classification numbers (HS codes) are correctly stated on invoices
submitting the customs declaration electronically, either through the web customs clearance service or via messages from business software
